Why Should you Wear Sports Socks when Training?
It’s no secret that most sports depend on the feet to carry and move the body. There are few sports which don’t see us upright and reliant upon on our humble feel to run, jog, jump and lift, which is why choosing the correct pair is paramount to your protection and ability when training.
The benefit of a good pair of sport socks is twofold:
- Injury Prevention
- Performance Enhancement
It may seem unrealistic to suggest that a pair of socks could have the magical capabilities of supporting such desirable qualities in an athlete, but there’s science behind the madness.
Impact & Protection
- Woven or elastic compression socks will reduce the risk of blood clots and ease the pressure of blood returning to the heart
- Additional support at the arch, heel and toe, reduces the risk of shock absorption and softens the blow of hard landings and repetitive contact with hard surfaces.
- The tight fit of sports socks means the feet have less opportunity to slip around in your trainer and cause pesky blisters.
Sweat Resistance
- Sports socks should be made of natural materials and ideally have Coolmax fibres running through them which are very effective at absorbing moisture in the feet or shoes; preventing ghastly odours and irritation.
- Such resistant wicks in the material also reduce the opportunity for nasty fungal infections to breed on your feet.
Support & Recovery
- Sports socks actually increase blood flow to your muscles whilst your training, which helps to prevent and ease long term soft tissue damage such as shin splints and swelling.
- By protecting the feet with the right composition of fabrics and sports specific technologies, you are allowing the feet to work for longer and recover at a quicker speed than if you were wearing an average pair of socks.
